The Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) for England and Wales is advertising a scheme to recruit to the role of Senior Magistrate of the Falkland Islands. The Northern Ireland Judicial Appointments Commission (NIJAC) has been asked to assist with the advertisement of this scheme and we hereby provide you with the following information regarding the role and a link to the JAC website which will give you access to further information and the means of application.
Eligibility: applicants should meet the following criteria: a minimum of 7 years’ recent relevant experience as a practicing professional advocate (solicitor, barrister or equivalent) in the UK, a Commonwealth country or in a UK Overseas Territory, as well as a minimum of three years’ full time, or five years’ part-time judicial experience and experience in working on matters involving criminal trials, family law and coroners’ inquests.
He/she exercises a jurisdiction comparable to that of a Crown Court/County Court Judge in England and Wales, and not - despite the constitutional title - that of a magistrate.
The Senior Magistrate is the only resident judicial office holder in the Falkland Islands. The Chief Justice (who is based in the UK) visits the Falkland Islands at regular intervals when the business of the Supreme Court so requires.
Salary: The package will range from c£86k to a maximum of £106k per annum (this includes a 25% pension equivalency element). Salary will be dependent on qualifications and experience.
